ABC is often asked: " why are you not NAEYC anymore..?" π yay...yes ✌️️ππ
and why is project based .... Reggio approach better that PUSD schools are going ga-ga (Design 39) over?
Let's imagine you have a party π on New Year's Eve. And you have your daughter and little son with you every time. (Similar to a teacher and students in a class)
NAEYC would say : make a plan by yourself ... since in NAEYC children are required to follow what ever you plan ;( director does the curriculum plans in most cases and passes it to the teachers with little to deviate from) ... send it to the invitees ( families before it is executed).
One item in the plan you are executing; is to buy a dress for daughter and decorations for party. So off you ask your children to hop in the car and you'll go shopping. ππππΆ
( and if you felt like going in the morning instead of evening... sorry π you can't change π)
As per NAEYC: you need to go by your plan ( since you already sent it to the in invitees).
During executing (teacher) you will tell your children this is what needs to be done ✅ and will go and complete it with them together. Your daughter may not want to buy a dress π but just some sports shoes which she is very very eager to have for her tennis πΎ. BUT YOU CANNOT, SINCE YOU ARE TO GO AS PER THE CALENDAR ASSIGNED! REMEMBER... IT IS NAEYC!
Your little son wants to eat... but it is not lunchtime yet!( lunch as per plan happens at 12:00 noon... and breakfast π³ was done away... the plan cannot change just for one child . The teacher is in control)
CLASS CURRICULUM CALENDAR goes by letter of the day, color of the week, story of the day earlier etc.... THERE IS LITTLE OR NONE COLLABORATION BY your Daughter. SO .... π¬π¬π¬.. she cannot choose or opt out of the dress π purchase ! ! She will unwillingly go with you, little or no interest in the purchased dress π, and tag along, distracted till you reach home.
She becomes a follower π ...( well your NAEYC ACCREDITED Program... that is well respected, made it easier for themselves ( director and teacher) ... by NOT involving the children in the decision making process .
THIS IS A TEACHER π€ DIRECTED CURRICULUM.... which will be executed even if your daughter / son is sick π·, not wanting to learn that letter since he is ahead of his letters OR or even if he is curious πabout why a caterpillar π crawls and has so many feet? .......
...,It is like you and me having to go on a walk when we would like to curl and read a book πππππ©
This made us REJECT Our EXISTING NAEYC Program. πππ.
We turned to ask what makes our children thinkers...
What makes them want to be children.
What drives the love of learning into them.
What makes them excited to Want to come to class each day ( like excited to go shopping and planning the party π )
What increases their confidence in themselves.
What and how do they become leaders ... believing in themselves.
What will make them be responsible individuals making respectful and safe choices.
We need to respect them for their ideas... to encourage them in believing in their own choices and ideas. π
We need to encourage collaboration to increase their confidence in being them selves. ππ
We , at ABC are getting great success ✌️at having our Project Based -Reggio inspired program where with the teacher's soft direction the children follow their love for learning✍️ , collaboration opportunities π₯ and finding answers π€π€π€To questions which even adults need to google!!
Finally we understand... these times and the curiosity to ask questions will not come back if not encouraged and built upon as a foundation NOW ..!
We understand our children.
We encourage questions.
We build on their questions and let them lead and realizes their ideas into a big class project ... where all share and collaborate in their learning process .... filled with fun and kindergarten completion !
ALL THIS HAPPENS ONLY AT......A B C ! πππ
